Driving Effective Employee Training: Do More with Less

There is a perfect storm of factors that is making it imperative for corporate learning teams to take a look at how they are managing their back-office operations, particularly the use of in-person, instructor-led training (ILT) and virtual instructor-led training (vILT).

Instructor-led training utilization, which took a predictable dip during 2020, has continued to rebound in the past two years and shows no signs of slowing down. Brandon Hall Group research clearly shows an increase in the usage of instructor-led training in 2021 and preliminary data from 2022 indicates that trend is continuing. In addition, 66% of respondents rate instructor-led training as Highly or Very Effective.

Driving Effective Employee Training: Do More with Less

When you look at this trend through the lens of other business-impacting factors, the need to be as efficient as possible becomes evident. Consider that an increasing number of learning functions are being managed in a decentralized or hybrid model — meaning more training execution is happening outside the direct span of control of the corporate learning team. Many learning organizations are also being restructured or reorganized and learning budgets are once again being slashed in response to economic challenges in the business. Reductions in learning specific headcount or the inability to fill open roles mean learning leaders are picking up more and more responsibilities.

“There is so much on the shoulders of those managing the training operations and we find so much of their work still being done in manual spreadsheets and Outlook calendars when there is an opportunity to streamline and automate those tasks,” said Stephan Pineau, CEO of Brandon Hall Group™ SmartChoice Bronze Preferred Provider Training Orchestra.

Pineau, along with Director of Solutions Peter Olyarchuk, recently joined Principal HCM Analyst Matt Pittman for a webinar about this important topic. You can view a recording of that conversation here: The Time Is Now Webinar.

During the webinar, Pineau addressed how a focused and intentional approach to training operations management can indeed help learning teams train more with less by helping you to organize your training resources, simplify scheduling, engage your resources, and build your network of training talent. The right platform can help you automate much of this by ensuring the ability to optimize training scheduling and resource use, optimize training investments, secure training operations, find and engage your best experts, and make the most of your data.

Knowing the use of ILT and vILT as training modalities isn’t going away, and knowing that these are costly methodologies to employ, reducing expenses by optimizing processes is critical. Being intentional in your approach to your learning operations can reap big rewards.
