For the past couple of years, we watched the democratization of learning slowly become a reality. Just as technology has put high-end music recording into people’s living rooms and professional-quality video into their hands, technology makes it easier for people who may not be instructional designers to create powerful, professional learning programs.

Providers have been nibbling at the edges of this democratization from different sides. The big desktop-authoring vendors offer more agile, cloud-based versions of their tools and many LMS and LXP providers now include simple drag-and-drop interfaces for content creation. But these solutions are either too much or not enough.

Absorb Software decided to attack the problem from the middle out, providing a robust and powerful solution that is easy to use. After acquiring Koantic in August, Absorb now offers Absorb Create as either a standalone authoring tool or integrated into Absorb LMS.

Absorb Create eliminates the need for complex instructional design to create engaging, effective learning content. It allows authors who lack development experience to create content with interactive slides, video assessments and more.

Users can upload a library of content objects to create the courses, including video, audio and image files — all optimized for use and playback in courses. The tool is designed to appeal to less experienced authors, so there is a library of available templates to get started.

Multiple authors can be assembled in groups and assigned roles such as content creator, reviewer or publisher with specific permissions for what they can and cannot do, helping to keep versions and edits under control.

Essentially, Absorb Create fills that cavernous gap between desktop authoring and WYSWYG content creators to give subject matter experts — and even learners themselves — a powerful tool to share their knowledge in an engaging, impactful way.
