Searching for Solutions: Why Does Leadership Development Often Fail?

By Claude Werder, Vice President and Principal HCM Analyst, Brandon Hall Group

Employers pay more attention to leadership development than any other area of human capital management, according to the latest Brandon Hall Group research. But only one in five organizations believes their LD programs have a significant impact on the business.

To make matters worse, despite generally dismal results from LD programs, most organizations pledge each year to spend more time and money on them.

Let’s stop the insanity. Companies can’t keep cranking out the same type of leadership development programs year after year and expect a different result.

Leadership development is vitally important and we want to be part of the solution by providing new frameworks and tools. But we need your help. We have some important questions we need you to answer. For instance:

  • Is LD focused on mastery of foundational skills? If not, why not?
  • Is LD focused on competencies that reflect business objectives? If not, why not?
  • Does your organization ensure personal and professional goals of high-potentials line up with business culture and objectives? If not, why not?
  • Do organizations measure LD in ways that show whether behaviors are changing? If not, why not?

You get the idea. This survey is short and to the point. (And if you’re using leading practices, it’s even shorter because you don’t have to tell us why you’re not doing them.)

Click on this link to take the survey.

We’ll give you a summary report of the LD research, a related report from our library — and we’ll throw in a $5 Amazon gift card for the first 100 respondents. It’s not a trip to Vegas or anything, but one can never have enough Amazon gift card dollars.

Help us help you and thousands of other organizations get LD right. Click here to take the survey.
