Strategic Measurement: Ensuring Learning has Positive Impact on Performance

This report, based on Brandon Hall Group’s 2016 Learning Measurement Study, discusses learning measurement as an outgrowth of a learning strategy focused on performance as an outcome. The research shows that, despite best intentions, corporate learning is often not measured beyond consumption and course completion and essentially becomes learning for learning’s stake. The report suggests approaches organizations can take to make measurement a strategic endeavor that helps learning have a positive impact on performance.

The Learning/Performance Nexus

If leaders of an organization want the learning function to have an impact on the business, there must be some degree of alignment between the learning strategy and the overall goals of the business. In fact, the two most important learning outcomes for organizations are an improvement in both organizational and individual performance. Despite this, nearly 60% of organizations that responded to Brandon Hall Group’s 2016 Learning Measurement Study said learning is not aligned at all with business goals. This research spotlight looks at how organizations can better link learning to both individual and organizational performance.

Employee Engagement Is Not Enough!

What does it mean to prioritize engagement at your organization? Almost all organizations conduct employee engagement surveys, and I have even seen from Brandon Hall Group’s 2016 Employee Engagement Survey that there is a shift, especially among high-performing organizations (HiPOs), from conducting employee engagement on an annual basis to a quarterly or twice-a-year basis.
