Informal Learning Drives Corporate University at Xerox

To support an organizational change initiative and to develop the skills and competencies required to make the new strategy a success, a small team in Xerox Global Learning Services was chartered with the task of creating Xerox Services University, or more simply as XSU. The team focused on the 70/20/10 model, which professes that formal learning (10%) represents only a fraction of the learning that occurs in the workplace. Employees also learn from exposure to new ideas and behaviors (20%) while day-to-day experience (70%) comprises the majority of learning. This effort earned Xerox a Gold Award for Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Building an ELearning Team in Taipei

In pursuit of its goal to make Taipei a model city, the Taipei City Government has created an eLearning Operations Team. Through effective training methods, this Operations Team helps the various teams inside the organization to maximize professional effectiveness to achieve organizational objectives. It has also established a digital training exchange platform through which members of the various internal teams can interact. This earned a Gold Award for Best Team Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

MOOC Trains Software Engineers at Capgemini

The “Software Engineer of the Future” MOOC, developed by Capgemini University, is set up to support software engineers as they transition from traditional development methods, tools, and behaviors to those that they will need to work in the growing digital markets. Each week a new package of ‘bite-sized’ content is released, containing videos, documents, reference material and knowledge quizzes. There is also a challenge each week that participants submit so that they can apply what they have learned. Capgemini won a Gold Award for Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Video Learning to Empower Suicide Prevention

  1. S. clinicians in behavioral health and substance abuse services are faced daily with the prospect of treating suicidal people. The problem is, the vast majority of these professionals have little to no training in evidence-based practices (EBPs), shown in research to actually improve patient outcomes. As an eLearning solutions provider in the field of suicide prevention, Empathos focuses on work that is truly life or death. Its video initiative, in conjunction with its learning partner Expertus, has seen positive results. Post-training survey data shows that 75% of learners do plan to make changes to their clinical approach with suicidal patients. This earned Empathos a Gold Award for Best Use of Video in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Developing Marketing Engineers at MediaMath

In response to the growing demand for talent and a lack of education in the new advertising technology industry, MediaMath created the Marketing Engineer Program both to educate those transitioning into the industry and to provide a robust talent pipeline for MediaMath, as well as the partners and clients. Participants train with teams across the organization, learning the ins and outs of digital marketing, the software platform, and the advertising technology industry. This program earned a Silver Award for Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Leveraging Technology for Career Planning at Accenture

Accenture knows from its internal studies that 90% of people think about their future career, 37% of people have a plan for their career, and only 50% of those are actually happy with their plan. So Accenture set out to design a non-linear, iterative career planning process, which is simple, transparent, and inspiring. Career Planning at Accenture is built on a digital platform leveraging user-centric design and is accessible on mobile devices as well as standard desktops. The implementation of this technology earned Accenture a Silver Award for Best Learning Technology Implementation in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Comprehensive Onboarding at Canadian Tire

Canadian Tire Corporation (CTC) had a specific business goal to create employee engagement by developing consistent, engaging programs, tools and processes dedicated to supporting employees through their onboarding process. This comprehensive program led to improved stock prices, high Net Promoter Scores, and high learner engagement. The effort earned the company a Silver Award for Best Unique or Creative Learning and Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Reinvigorating Lean Six Sigma at Genpact

In the business process outsourcing sector, Genpact’s goal is to design, transform, and run intelligent business operations, including those that are complex and specific to a set of chosen industries. All this expertise is the outcome of strong Lean Six Sigma thinking and application that is deeply rooted in the company’s culture and DNA. To continue with this market differentiating branding and legacy, Genpact constantly invests in building a strong quality function. The strength of this function is 250 full time professionals, of which 200 are Black Belts supporting a large organization of 67,000 employees. The training program for this group is profiled in this case study, and measurable business impact attributed to the program is more than $1.4 billion. This earned Genpact a Silver Award for Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Preparing Financial Consultants for Licensing Exam in Turkey

In order to service customers and sell private pension products in Turkey, financial consultants must pass a rigorous exam. As an employer within the financial services industry, AvivaSA developed its own internal program to help prepare employees for the exam. The program was delivered through a blend of modalities, including assessments, classroom training, eLearning, and videos. The company beat the national average pass rate by 20 percentage points in 2015 — a testament to the program’s value. The company earned a Bronze Award for Best Results of a Learning Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Compliance Training Drives Change at Texas College

Federal mandates make training in harassment, discrimination and sexual violence prevention a legal requirement for higher education, but leaders at Tarrant County College in Texas wanted to create real campus change. TCC designed the courses to be instructionally sound and engaging, so that learners would finish each course feeling not only like they learned something, but also ready to take action. Learners learned some of the key aspects of prevention and were able to improve understanding significantly over the course of the training. This earned tuition a Bronze Award for Best Advance in Compliance Training in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Video Training on Food Safety at Carrefour Supermarkets

The safe handling of food products is a concern for any food service firm, but supermarkets have to get it right the first time. Carrefour, a Turkish supermarket, made this a priority with a recent training initiative. The training videos were shot inside Carrefour stores using real employees and are now hosted within the company’s video training platform, which is tied to the firm’s LMS. This effort earned the supermarket chain a Bronze Award for Best Use of Video in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

BT’s Personal Development Planning Toolkit

The Personal Development Planning (PDP) Toolkit is a BT tool that supports a 70/20/10 approach to learning and gives individuals the opportunity to learn, develop and grow. The toolkit encourages employees to take their skills and career to the next level and drive their own development. It brings together both internal and external resources into one place to help individuals plan their career effectively. This has led to an increase in engagement and employee satisfaction scores and earned the telecommunications firm a Bronze Award for Best Unique or Innovative Learning and Development Program in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Video Training of Literacy Volunteers at AARP Foundation

AARP’s Foundation Experience Corps is designed to provide AARP members with the opportunity to tutor and mentor K-3rd grade classrooms in topics like literacy. AARP needed to create a more consistent volunteer learning experience across the 21 cities where the tutoring program takes place. So it partnered with Pearson to develop a set of literacy training videos. This effort earned AARP a Bronze Award for Best Use of Video in the 2015 Brandon Hall Group Excellence Awards.

Let’s Focus on Building a Classroom for the Modern Learner

Most of the research, discussion and general buzz around learning today is all about what’s going on outside of the classroom. But the truth is, we still deliver an enormous amount of instructor-led classroom training. The classroom is still king, Principal Learning Analyst David Wentworth writes in his latest blog, and it will remain so for the foreseeable future. But because of all the new technology and focus on informal and experiential learning, the classroom isn’t being discussed much. This is a problem, because part of the classroom’s challenge is that the experience seems outdated.

Chief Executive Officer of Brandon Hall Group Mike Cooke Prior to joining Brandon Hall Group, Mike Cooke was the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of AC Growth. Mike held leadership and executive positions for the majority of his career, at which he was responsible for steering sales and marketing teams to drive results and profitability. His background includes more than 15 years of experience in sales, marketing, management, and operations in the research, consulting, software and technology industries. Mike has extensive experience in sales, marketing and management having worked for several early high-growth emerging businesses and has implemented technology systems to support various critical sales, finance, marketing and client service functions. He is especially skilled in organizing the sales and service strategy to fully support a company's growth strategy. The concept of growth was an absolute to Mike and a motivator in starting AC Growth, in order to help organizations achieve research driven results. Most recently, Mike was the VP and General Manager of Field Operations at Bersin & Associates, a global analyst and consulting services firm focused on all areas of enterprise learning, talent management and talent acquisition. Tasked with leading the company's global expansion, Mike led all sales operations worldwide. During Mike's tenure, the company has grown into a multi-national firm, conducting business in over 45 countries with over 4,500 multi-national organizations. Mike started his career at MicroVideo Learning Systems in 1992, eventually holding a senior management position and leading all corporate sales before founding Dynamic Minds. Mike was CEO and Co-Founder of Dynamic Minds, a custom developer of software programs, working with clients like Goldman Sachs, Prentice Hall, McGraw Hill and Merrill Lynch. Also, Mike worked for Oddcast, a leading provider of customer experience and marketing solutions, where he held a senior management position leading the company into new markets across various industries. Mike also serves on the Advisory Board for Carbon Solutions America, an independent sustainability consulting and carbon management firm that specializes in the design and implementation of greenhouse reduction and sustainability plans as well as managing the generation of carbon and renewal energy and energy efficiency credits. Mike attended University of Phoenix, studying Business Administration and Finance. He has also completed executive training at the Chicago Graduate School of Business in Chicago, IL.
